Puppy’s First Steps & Training

At Early Spring Corgis, we believe early training is key to raising a happy, confident, and well-mannered companion. Our puppies begin foundational training from the moment their paws hit the ground, and we’re here to help you continue that journey as they grow into your home and heart.

🌱 What We Start Before You Bring Puppy Home

From birth to go-home day, we carefully introduce each puppy to experiences that support their development:

  • Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) starting at Day 3
  • Noise desensitization (household sounds, grooming, thunder, vacuums, etc.)
  • Puppy socialization with children, other dogs, and trusted visitors
  • Crate conditioning to build comfort and reduce anxiety
  • Beginning potty habits with outdoor and pad exposure
  • Basic handling for grooming, exams, and calm behavior

Each puppy leaves our home with a strong head start in confidence, comfort, and trust.

🎓 First Week at Home – Tips from the Breeder

The first week sets the tone! Here’s what we recommend:

✅ Crate Training

  • Use a crate as your pup’s safe space — never as punishment
  • Start with short intervals and always offer praise and comfort
  • Expect some whining; consistency and routine are key

🚽 Potty Training

  • Take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after naps, meals, and playtime
  • Praise and reward immediately after they go outside
  • Keep accidents low by watching for sniffing or circling indoors

🐶 Name Recognition

  • Use their name often with a positive tone and rewards
  • Avoid using their name when correcting — it should always feel good to them

💡 Foundational Commands to Teach First

Here are the most helpful commands to begin with:

  1. “Sit” – builds patience
  2. “Come” – vital for recall and safety
  3. “Leave it” – helps prevent chewing or dangerous behavior
  4. “Place” or “Go to bed” – great for helping them settle

Use short 5-minute training sessions multiple times a day — consistency and praise go a long way!

🐾 Our Favorite Tools

Here’s what we personally use and recommend:

  • Treat pouch and soft training treats
  • Crate sized for adult Corgi with divider
  • Potty bells (optional but helpful)
  • Snuffle mat or enrichment toys
  • Clicker (optional for clicker training)
